Cleaning between sand and glass...

How do you do it? How do you clean the stuff that grows on the glass between the sand and the glass itself if you have a DSB? I'm referring to the purplish film that forms. Or do you just leave it? :notsure:

i leave mine, plus if you have a DSB and you disturb the sand alot you can release gases trapped in the sandbed which can cause a spike in your levels

IF YOUR TANK IS MADE OUT OF GLASS ONLY:
Do not do this on acrylic tanks...

You can actually scrape the salt and algae build up from your tank walls by using a box cutter blade and PVC pipe (as a handle!)
Ive attached a picture of it. It will NOT scratch your glass. - Just make sure it's a glass tank.
I only scrape the front of my tank for viewing purposes.
If it is done correctly you will see the stuff flake away as you scrape it, your filter will pick this up!

Thud, he's asking about the algae that grows in the thin layer of water between the glass and sand in a deep sand bed.
Nice invention though.

haha thanks, it works REALLY great.
As for the stuff growing within the sand - mixing that is a bad idea, I don't think it's that big of a deal, although we all love white white sand.

I was concerned about disturbing the DSB. I've been cleaning it off with a scraper, but it meant moving quite a bit of sand. Not good. Thanx!
