I have crushed coral as my base. Do I need to "vacuum" this the
keep the wastes down, or is that what the clean up crew is for?

I would still vacume it. I have a 55 with cc and I vacume it half at a time every couple weeks.

I will be taking all of the fish out tommorrow to transfer to a QT tank to lower salinity to treat Ich, and will be removing the LR at that time.
I have 100 # of Southdown sand, what do I need to do to get it to be LS?
I guess this would be the time.

As long as your live rock stays "alive" the bacteria from the live rock will slowly seed your sand and turn it into "live sand" in a few months. A way to speed up the process, is to add a bacteria supplement/starter like Special Blend into your tank. I use Special Blend bacteria and think it is a great product.
