Ive got 50/50 crush coral, live sand mixed together. My hermit crabs do a really good job keeping it all clean. Seems when i do water changes and i syphon the gravel i get amonia. So how important is it to shphon the gravel?
That is the beauty of a live DSB, you do not need to nor should you siphon it. That being said, however, if you see any uneaten food at the bottom, get it out without stirring the sand, and lighten up on the feeding.
