clicking in tank

hay i picked up some new lr and ever since whene the light are out i keep hearing this clik sound like som one hit my tank with some thing its driving me crazzy what can it be

Could be a mantis shrimp, if it is it is a :scared: BAD THING!!!!

I believe a mantis shrimp will come out a dark time. If you do a search on these boards Im sure u will find lots of tricks for catching the little ba$tard!!

if it is a mantis....whatever you do , don't reach in and grab it. They call them "thumbsplitters" for a reason. You can get a trap for it.

Stomatopods- (aka Mantis Shrimp) are predatory shrimp that can easily cause havoc in a home system. The mantis is notorious for making a loud clicking sound, although this is also a trait of the less menacing Pistol Shrimp. I have read that the clicking noises of a pistol shrimp snap in ones and twos and the clicking noises for a mantis shrimps make rapid multiple clicks. This could be one way to tell the difference. Another way is if you have inhabitants that come up missing and also hear the clicking sounds... it's probably a mantis. These are not normally welcomed hitchhikers although some do keep them successfully in specie tanks.
The Mantis Shrimp (which on a side note are not really a "shrimp") has two distinct sexes male and female. They can be breed in captivity but w/o a large space (aquarium) they will most likely end up fighting to the death.
If you find a mantis be careful not to "grab" it or attempt to remove it with your hands. They can cause injury to you as well as your tank.

Mantis shrimp are bad for a reef tank but many people keep them in species specific tanks. Great to watch. So if you catch it do not kill it throw it in your sump and ask around sure someone would want it. And if you want to ship i will take it.

yeah , dont kill it. take it to lfs and trade it in. people are always looking to buy them, especially if it is peacock.
get one of those red flashlight lense covers and look for it at night after the lights go off

i have the same problem mine is as long as my middle finger if i catch it and its in tak who wants it

Once I located the particular rock he was in, I had to take the entire rock out. I put it in a big rubbermaid container and sprayed it until he came out. :scared:

Mantis .. possibly. Could be a pistol shrimp too. If it's one loud crack then its probably a mantis, but a quicker series of clicks is more likely a pistol shrimp. They are reef safe, but will disrupt your sand bed and the noise can be a little annoying.
