Clicking noise

Every once in a while I hear a clicking noise similar to two pieces of shell cracking against one another in my tank.
It is not very loud.
I have examined every piece of live rock as carefully as I can, yet cannot find the culprit.
Lighting has no effect, and I haven't had any mysterious disappearences.
Is this a pistol shrimp or a mantis or something else? Any clues on how I can find out?

More then likely it is a pistol shrimp. I had the same noise in my tank for over a year. I finaly got tired of the noise and took the sucker out.
They hide in the rock very well so look for signs like tunneling under the rock, thats how I found mine.

If it is mostly at night then chances are its a pistol shrimp. If it is all day then maybe something in your equipment.

I've heard it a few times during the day, checked all the equip, not there....
Have heard it with equip off and on.
It usually is in a series of 2-4 clicks. Not evenly spaced and I have gone hours without hearing it and sometimes in happens 2-3 times an hour.....
Not a crisis, but I am worried about it being a mantis. I have heard they can crack glass and take out almost any fish that wanders to close.

Yes, it could be a manitis, but unlikely if you haven't had any fatalities yet. Probably a pistol.
At exactly 40 mins after the lights in my aquarium goes off, I hear a loud cracking noise coming from the aquarium. Its definately not creatures in the tank. It only happens once. I'm assuming it is a noise coming from cooling down light fixture, or perhaps the tank itself is making the noise due to cooling down....I also here a similiar noise in my bedroom at night when the TV has been off a bit...usually just as I dose off and the darn noice wakes me up every night!

What do you have in your tank right now? Fish? Inverts?

I have 2 percs, a snowflake, domino damsel, CBS, peppermint shrimp, scooter dragonet,1 urchin, 19 blue hermits and some FD that came with the rock.
I took all equip off the tank just to see and clicking is still there, definetly(sp) in the tank.
And something that makes a clicking noise....

I have the same darn thing! I have tried just about everything listed in these posts (left light off for a day, shut down equipment, etc., to ensure it is not equipment). I have never added any shrimp personally but I would guess it came with my LR when I setup the tank. It is not a problem, just annoying that I don't know what it is. Also, my purple tip anonme has "disappeared" in the last two days after several months. It was doing absolutely fine. I cannot find a trace of it anywhere. Could something have "eaten" it?

if you have perc. clowns they may be the ones doing the clicking.i have a perk. and he makes clicking sounds.it also says in the books ive read that perc. clowns will make clicking sounds.
