Teetee...
Have you checked to make sure that there are not any wires coming in and out of some of your live rocks? Maybe one of your criters bought himself a computer and is surfing the internet! :D

If you only hear like 12 a day, as opposed to hundreds, then it is not any of the critters I mentioned above.

The clicking in my tank came from a snail that had made it's way into a hang on filter. The impellar was hitting against it. The snail was fine. It lives today and I moved my intake tube away from the live rock.

Congradulatons on your mantis shrimp. :D

P.S. When was the last time you added LR? When did the sounds begin? FYI, I had a mantis that came in on a huge piece of LR, and he didn't start clicking for about 3 weeks after I got the rock. This is the key: when did you last add any rock to the tank.

The latest intro of live rock was about two weeks ago; however, this clicking sound has been going on for about two months now. If there were a mantis wouldn't I notice some destruction by now? My yellow corris does sleep under the substrate at night. Would he not be a victim? I'd like to think that I do not have a mantis & that this clicking sound is something else (sound like denial?lol  ).

That resembles the sound of a pistol shrimp. The bigger it gets the louder. Pray for a pistol as it is harmless as far as I can tell.

Not neccisarily. As I said, it shouldn't be a problem until it gets large. The Wrasse that sleeps on the bottom may be larger than the shrimp.

OK, so assuming that there is a mantis in my tank, outside of the clicking sound, what other signs should i looking for or be aware of as evidence of a mantis? BTW Thanks everyone for all your imput on this mystery. TT.

Well, I actually saw what I thought was "smoke" coming from one of my live rocks. This is when I first saw him scurry from one hole to another, lightening fast. Then I just waited him out. I finally saw those two eyes poking out of the rock. He was certainly awesomely beautiful. The "smoke" as it turns out was the debris field from him banging with that ferocious club on the inside of the live rock.
Here is a site to educate and enlighten you on these wonderful, albeit highly dangerous, creatures:

I am working on removing my 3rd Mantis shrimp from my reef tank. The first one was quite large and really bold. He would swim out in plain sight during the day. I would lose things here and there...(fish, shrimp, snails, crabs, etc.) The second was in a small piece of live rock that I put in my refugium and was easy to capture once I heard his clicking. The 3rd, however, I havn't seen...I only hear the clicking. All I can say is get rid of him before he gets too large! He will wreak havoc.
