climbing invertebrates

All my snails and my brittle star were at the top of the tank this morning, and they still are. Is this an indication of a bad chemical level? Or do they just like to climb?
Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are low, and SG is 1.021

ammonia is less than 0.25 ppm...it's a cheap test kit, that's the best resolution I can get.
All our tanks always trace slight ammonia and we're fairly sure it's due to rinsing the test tube with tap water.

Wasn't your tank still cycling? When did you add the snails and brittle star? how did you acclimate the star. Brittle stars are nocturnal mine only come out when the lights are out. What are your exact readings of Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. If you are always reading some ammonia on your test kits you should get some new test kits (Salifert makes excellent test kits, well well worth the little bit extra that they cost).
Also when you test your water you should always rinse the test tube out with your tank water before you add the water to test it so that tap water is not an issue.

in my first reef i didn't have much water flow and it was only heating up on the top of the aquarium....so see if that is why(they could jsut be trying to find the heat) a good temp is anywhere between 77-83 IMO.....also it could be just a fluke cause mine somtimes are all at the top jsut because they feel like being there.....................lol

Rinse the test tube with tank water instead.

just got done testing, here's the levels the best I can tell them. I need a better testing kit I think.
pH - 8.3
ammonia 0.25-0.50 ppm
nitrites effectively 0
nitrates 10-20 ppm
temp is 84F
I work at a pet store that sells primarily dogs, but we've got 9 salt tanks and two show-tanks for salt. I set up my little 10 gallon on Sunday and on monday I sweet-talked the owner's wife into letting me buy 8 pounds of very very well cured live rock from the showtanks. I put them in on monday night, along with a few capfuls of the "Cycle" stuff they sell, and by tuesday afternoon the ammonia level had dropped down to less than .25 and the nitrates had risen just a bit.
I know you're supposed to wait to add stuff, but I went to the LFS to get an idea of stuff to add to the tank. While I was there, I asked if there were any creatures that wouldn't interfere with the cycle, you know, not fish, but something to at least look at instead of a dull empty tank. Of course, they sold me something. I guess it's my fault too for trusting them.
So right now I've got a ten gallon with 8 pounds of LR, 20lbs aragonite, an Emporer Mini-Biowheel filter, one dose of cycle, with a brittle star and green bubble-tip anemone.
My guess is things aren't looking good for our hero...

You should never add invertebrates during the cycle, they are way more sensitive to poor water quality than even fish are.
