closed loop

I'm not sure. In cars, closed loop is a mode of computer operation where the computer is reading air temp. readings, o2 sensor readings, coolant temp. and MAP readings in order to properly mix the air and fuel for combustion...:D
In a fish tank it would probably be something like a power head that simply stirrs water around without sending it anywhere or maybe it's a term to describe the system as a whole. If you have your fish tank drawing water in from the ocean and pumping it back out again, that could be open loop.
If you simply recirculate water within the system and don't let it exhaust anywhere then it could be called closed loop. If that's the case then we probably all have closed loop systems.

closed loop is just how a sump is plumbed into a system some ppl use it and some dont. It dont really have anything to do with water movement just the plumbing of the water.

Uhm, no.:happyfish
A closed loop is all about water circulation. It is used in place of powerheads. Here is one design. Do a search for them in the equipment forum.

It a seperate system, hence the "closed" part.

I have seen tanks with these and if your not careful it will looks just as bad or worse than having powerheads setting in the tank.

Cheese - i saw that link you posted, so its one pump that divided into two return lines?
Do you have to "over power" the pump to get ample circulation to two out lines?
What size pump would you say for a 180? and size pvc?
Intake is drilled pvc?
what is that black thing that looks like its where the lines divide into two?

Yes, usually there is 1 intake and 2 return, the pump size will reflect the size of the plumbing and the desired amount of turnover. As far as the size of the pump and PVC I would post that question in the equipment forum or do a search for your size tank.
Yes that is just drilled PVC for the intake, the black unit is a scwd(switching current water director) aka a wave maker.
