a closed loop is a drain from your tank going directly into a pump (not using a sump, its its own system , hence closed), that will push the water back into the tank. many people drill the back of the tank for ins and outs, and it can be plumbed to fit any budget or tank needs. some people add Wave-devices to them as well. this will add mass amounts of GPH's all powered by one external pump is much more economically wise choice , than cheaply built powerheads that last about 2 years, some of which run the risk of catching on fire (in the tank). Best case, you are no longer dealing with builky powerheads taking away from a 'natural' reef, paying less in electric, paying less in pump maintenance or replacement. worst case , you are preventing PHs causing electrical problems, spilling oils into the tank...
