90 gal tank with 100 lbs. of live rock
1 clown trigger
1 squirrel fish
1 blue face angel
Help!!! We bought a blue face angel from a store about 10 days ago, he was being picked on by a sohal Tang in the tank at the store but he looked ok. About 2 days later his eye became cloudy and a little swollen. He eats Angel formula soaked in garlic guard like a pig, and he is not afraid to take it away from another fish in our tank. He also swims fine and does not seem sick. Today he developed a small white fuzzy looking patch on his fin. We have been treating him with ampicillin for about 5 days and doing daily water changes. His eye shows no signs of improvement. Do you have any suggestions? Please Help. Thanks

Wecome to the boards!!! His eye will heal. Garlic guard has no medicinal benefits. It is just a flavoring. Use fresh garlic and add some vitamines to his food as well. Are you using medication in the display or in a qt tank?

I have been doing a 20% water change everyday for the last five days. do you think i should be doing a water change everyday. I was thinking that between medication and cleaner water it should help his eye. Looking at pet store tonite and i notice they didn't that care of there nets at all. Never go to that store again. In the whole state of minnesota there is only 1 good fish store and i should of bought a blue face angle there. I'm think the eye problem is for there net.

It could very well be from the net. I have a couple of questions for you. What is the name of the med you used? Do you have inverts (snails, crabs, stars, etc.) Why have you not had luck with qt tanks? You will find that so many problems can be easily avoided with the use of a qt tank.

i'm using ampicillin in the tank. i have 4 snail and 4 crabs. i don't think it will hurt them because i have use it on them before. Looking back i should of qt him first ,but now i hate to qt him and stress him out. I have a 20 gallon tank with 2 live rock that are almost cure if not. I could put him in there if i have to. ammoia 0 and nitate is 20. I don't know how bad the med is on the rocks. I can do extra water change to help the bio of the tank because of the med. I really just want to do whats best for the fish. If treating him if the display is better for him i'm all for that. any ideas you got I'm interested in. Thanks. I'm also now using real garlic in it food

The med is just called ampicillin or is that the main ingredient? I am a little confused about the rest of that post. You have LR in your qt and are not sure if it is fully cured but the ammonia is zero? A qt tank does not stress fish out in any way as long as it is adequately set up.

Have you tested the qt water? They should not smell at all after all of that time. Do you have water movement in the qt? I do not know that medication. So I will not comment further on it. Just please read the package and make sure there is no formalin, copper, or malechite green in it. Medication is never a good idea in a display tank, but again, I do not know this med.

If you want my honest oppinion, I would stop using the medication. Do a couple of water changes and just dose his food with fresh garlic and vitamines. A cloudy eye is not that big of a deal and will heal quickly. Make sure his food is nutritious.

No, those are both reef safe meds and you would think they would be ok to add to a display being they are all natural, BUT they deplete the oxygen in the system and cause the skimmer to go crazy. No med is safe in a display IMO. As far as how long it will take the eye to clear, it depends on the fish's immune system. My friend had his fish get cut by a new surgeonfish and never once added a med. He feeds his fish very healthy foods and the fish healed on it's own without any medical help. Feed him well and give him vitamines. He will be fine.

Do you mean 1 3-5 inch long fish or 3-5 one inch long fish? Please remember to go slow and add no more than one fish per 3 weeks. You have to give your system time to stabilize. Longer than 3 weeks between fish is even better. Remember to qt your fish for at least 3-4 weeks and be sure to watch them VERY closely durring that time. If disease happens you want it to be in the qt tank. Yes the emp 400 is fine for the 20 gallon qt. You are very welcome and if you have any more questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask

i notice the other day that the two other fish started to get a eye problem, and that the angles other eye was getting a small cloudy spot. So i did a fresh water dip on each of them for two minutes. after they each got a did the stuff came right off. So now the angle still got the one bad eye but it is starting to look better . beside the dip i'm now treating the tank with prazipro. because i beleive it has eye fluke. from what i read eye fluke will spread to other fish very easy. I shoud have qt him from the get go. From now on i will always qt new fish. I have gave the angle two ,two minute dips so far. I hope the prazipro will help. anyone have and comment and ideas please let me now.

anyone had any luck with prazilpro for eye flukes. The eye looks to be getting better. look at pet store and notice they had a couple of fish with bad eyes. I bet they got flukes in all there tanks. I really don't think many pet store take that good of care of there tanks. I see way you should qt a fish first. thanks would like to now if and of you have had good luck with prazilpro.
