If they are already mated then the male which is smaller will go through a sort of dance thing, but you can tell when they are breeding because they will lay eggs and gaurd them till they hach. If the are not mated it may take some time.
I just purchased a pair that was in a tank with a bunch of other clowns. I dont think they were mated but they are tank raised. They follow each other around all the time. I wonder if they are becoming a "pair"?
Even if they are not mated, there is a chance that they will mate after awhile, and if it is two clowns of the same ---, one will sometimes change --- to mate.
I have had 2 myself and the little one (male) goes by the big one(female) and starts spazzing.
I guess this is good and they are mated or going to be?
Whats next? 8)
Thanks!
I am interested in this as well. I bought 2 clowns that were tank raised and the only two in the tank. They were hanging around together and were hosting in an anenome. So I got all 3. The clowns hang around all the time together and love the anenome. They are still small, but in time I hope that they mate. I already know which one will be the male and female. One is larger than the other.
One question is how old do the clowns need to be before they mate?
Scott
Clowns need to be at least 1 year old before they become a mating pair, and sometimes (not always) another year to mate, but it mostly depends on the species of clown.
Hey all - these are all good questions - I would highl ysuggest Joyce Wilkerson's Book - CLOWNFISHES - the book is listed on this sitei nt he dry goods (or it used to be).
Clowns take up to 2 years to mate and produce eggs.
Tank Raised clowns take a little longer sometimes
The frenzied dance is a dance of submission and will show that the smaller one (male) is submissive and willing to serve the larger one (female).
If you leave two clowns of the same species in a tank long enough 1 of two things will happen.
1 - they will pair up and then potential spawn in the tank
2 - there will be a death because one gets over harrassed.
dbennett - please note that one will start looking beat-up and needing some special attention. I will catch my female in a clean glass and let the smaller beat-up male get a nice healthy meal .... you can also use a breeder's net to seperate the two for a while.
The pairing up process can be entertaining to watch - but it is also brutal at times!
Good luck!
the one's i got at the reef house started laying eggs after 8 weeks and they are still young a bit over a year old. one of these days i will try to get the eggs out and raise them
yeah they have some pretty decent ones - but I ahve not been impressed with thier coral selection lately!!
Mine I got here from SWF.com and they were very young!! still very young percs ...
