Hi, I had a new mushroom polyp pop up in my tank, and is about 3" across, and now my clown is trying to host it, will the be a problem for the mushroom? kind of like the location. also, if it isnt, is there anything like frogspawn of bubble coral that wouldnt mind the attention? is up on top of a rock, so no anemone gonna stay. Thanks for the info

my clown hosted a mushroom covered rock for a while. It was actually really cute, he would hide underneath them and poke his head out every once in a while

I have had one in love with a Pink Pearl for years now.
They will host with most anything at times.. Bang had a post today I was in with him and he had a shot of two hosting a Hairy Green. If Guy has Clowns doing it it must be OK

it doesn't sound good to me... if a clown trys to host anything but an anenome there is a good chance it will actually host it to death... just keep a close eye on the mushroom. I watched a B&W host a frogspawn in a friends tank and a couple months later the only coral to die was the frogspawn...

coincidence? clowns host many corals and they do fine (mine hosts a green toad stoal mushroom and cup coral) so it's not fair to compare your friends experience with everyone elses

That's fine! I read that if there are no anemones they will find a substitute. I have a rose anemone and my clownfish prefer my frogspawn instead!!! It doesn't hurt the frogspawn and won't hurt the mushrooms either. It actually helps it's home by smimming around in it and giving it oxygen. Clownfish will stay in frogspawn, mushrooms, anchor coral, and colt coral. I suggest the book: Clownfishes BY: Joyce D. Wilkerson. It's is not a brand new book, it's a couple years old but that book tought me all I needed to know about clownfish. I really suggest that you read this!

My clowns hosted my LT plate to death, and cause on of my frogspawn heads to brown jelly out. Most soft corals are much better substitutes as hosts then LPS coral.
You have to be careful with certain mushrooms, the larger ones, fuzzy's, hairy's, elephant ear, etc, are known fish-eaters and can kill a clown. However, a standard issue purple mushroom is nothing to worry about.

Yes a hosing Clown would hurt or kill a Long Tentacle easily. They are so fragile........ Sorry this happened. Heck I have a Green Hairy about a foot across that someday I expect to see him eating on of my swimming critters. Hopefully my devil fish DBG..............

It wil not hurt the mushroom trust me! All these worst case scenarios happened because of a different reason. Don't let these people tell you that that is not good. It won't hurt the mushroom!!!

Sorry to say that a clown/anemone fish hosting anything can have the potential to hurt or kill it, yes even anemones. If the clownfish is aggressive with its host it can irritate it to death. The probability for this to happen with different hosts varies, in some cases its worse in others its rarely seen. But to speak in absolutes is a no no. IMO.

ya I know I am just throwing it out there that I have heard a few stories of the clowns hosting something other than an anenome and the clown just irritating it to death. so that statement I made wasnt just based on that one experience... many things I have heard. either way right or wrong i could still happen

I agree that each case needs to be analysed independently. I've know quite a few Maroon Clowns that have literally torn pieces off of a mushroom by biting it. Generally speaking having Mushrooms host a Clownfish will usually work out fine but there is no sure thing.
Using LPS can also work but they should be quite a bit larger then the Clownfish. In my experience LPS actually grow faster when hosting a Clown but like it was mentioned before, if the Clown is rough with the coral then it will be damaged.

Yep Sometimes Clowns are a bit odd. This silly Maroon goof ball has been hosting this Pink Pearl since this tank was started, 1st fish 1st coral in 06, Both still going strong. Only issue is the stupid fish has his front dorsal worn off from agitation-iritatation under the coral at night.
