Clownfish facing extinction.

I don't know that I believe that story. increased demand, yes. but put on the brink of extinction because they noticed that one coral head had gone from 24 to 6 over two years? nah, don't believe it. there's no shortage in the lfs here, he has a 55 gallon tank with probably 100+ clowns, and they are tank raised.

Stupid kids, they see the movie and have to have the fish, but I don't think they're close to extinction either.
Just like Bangaii cardinals, they're so easy to raise in captivity there's no reason to still have to import them. Captive-raised are a lot easier to buy now.

I think that they Disney did do a little good. They made all of the fish that the little girl got die...I mean, I think that was an attempt to make the children realize that this fish isn't something that they would be capable of keeping. I don't blame Disney, I blame the parents.

wow. i dont know how accurate that extinction thing is but $47.81 USD for a compplete clown set up with anemone in australia. that dont sounl like it will support them for long, i mean the right light for a nem should cost more than that !

WOW! I doubt that it even has a light. Maybe the nem is fake, though? Even so, a 10 gallon tank with a filter and a fake nem and a fish would cost more than that.

Anyone else notice the article does not contain the words "percula" or "ocellaris". They act like 'the clownfish' is a species. Amateurish and speculative reporting. I expect nothing better from Fox. At least they took the time to fix all the British misspellings
.
Personally, I think the article is a bunch of detritus. I'm in the NE US, about as far as you can get from Australia, and every LFS has several TR percs or ocels wiggling around.
That said, while Disney did choose to highlight one of the most hardy, cheap, and easily kept species in the hobby as their lead, how many Hippo Tangs have died because Darla wants a Dory too? There's the species that was negatively impacted by the movie.

Clown is very colorful hardy fish this is why it is popular. Bags show it (food, sand, salt, equip). So most think hey that nice fish I want one. Before disney movie they were well known. Other reason is they were first marine fish to breed in captivity (so I have read on net heh). This makes supply easy and a strong fish.
hahaha no way clown is gone. Too many tank clowns. Not hard to repopulate.

What I find funny, is that everyone seems to have missed the point of the movie. Nemo was trapped in an aquarium. The whole point of the movie was for him to be free in the ocean with his dad. It actually made me feel bad for having one in my tank. I have Dory too. So I wonder whether when my son gets old enough will he brag that he has Nemo and Dory, or will he be smart enough to get the point and want to set the fish free?

what exactly would be smart about setting a tank kept fish "free" into the ocean? I think that would be a rather dumb idea, for a number of different reasons.
