Clownfish with Ich

I think my clownfish has Ich.
What is the best treatment in a reef type tank? Will the cleaner shrimp get rid of it, or will he just have to ride it out? It has been "panting" for the past few days and I noticed a couple very small white worm looking things on it.

I would not recommend the freshwater dip. This can really stress out fish which is one of the primary causes of ich.(Stress that is) Freshwater dips often hurt far more than they help. I would set up a Quarantine Tank (QT) if you do not already have one. 10 gal. should be sufficient. Small Hang On Tank (HOT) filter is all you need. Then you can start the process of hyposalinity. Do a search on this board for Hypo and you should find some good info. Let us know if you need help.

I agree with the above post, FW dips really stress out the fish and the fish can just get reinfected once you place him back in the tank because the ich parasite willl saty in the tanks as long as it has a host to live on. I would also recommend hyposalinity, this method is IMO the most effective and safest way for the fish but requires a hospital tank to do it.

I know fw dips are controversy but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I am treating for Ich as we speak and the thing that works best for me was to drop the salinty , as you drop your salinty you are taking out water which in turn removes some of the Ich polyps and helps irradicate the problem as well. I have inverts in my tank so I have to be careful. I did find a product made by Ruby Reefs called Kick ich. Don't know if it will work but am willing to try anything. There is another treatment out there that I found in the Disease fish forum that someone else mentioned called chloroquine phosphate. Aquatronics makes a product sold as Marex that is the same as this CP. The only problem is a lot of LFS do not carry this product. I will find the forum and post it so that you may go and read what this gentlemen wrote. Good luck
okay go the disease and treatment forum and a find a post that reads "Who needs Copper" and read all the information there. It is interresting.

You shouldnt drop salinity in the main tank with LR, LS or inverts. Kick-ich--been there, dont work, just stains the silicon (sp) on the tank corners and everything else it can. FW dips--again it MIGHT cure that fish for a moment or two, but the parasite is STILL in the main tank that you add the fish back into, therefore reinfecting.
Best bet--and been there--a hospital tank running. Put ALL fish into it (inverts can stay in main tank) and treat with hypo. True hypo @1.009. HTH ;)

Know how ya feel! But dont use that Kick ich, just from my experience its not worth it, stains everything! Like stated above, hypo is a no no with LR, LS or inverts. And for ya being being very careful with hypo, only one way works---hospital tank and TRUE hypo at 1.009. Get a ten gallon---10-15 bucks, well worth it. Then use that tank as a "temporary" home (QT) for new additions.
DONT GIVE UP! Its been since Jan this year and I still have nothing to look at (in my eyes).

Oh I am not giving up...love it to much. Just get aggrevated thats all. Well this Kick ich is clear does not have anything to stain, color wise. I have used Green ex before and it stains and so does Rid ich, been there done that too. I have a hospital tank and it will treat the infected fish but what about the host in the main tank. i can not move all the fish in there to a 10 gallon hospital. The only ones I care about are my clowns. I know that is mean but hell I cant catch the damsels and if I have to choose guess who I am choosing.....You got it the more expensive ones. I have manage to catch 2 of the damsels and put in my daughters tank, however they were not showing signs of Ich, this was more of okay you gotta go away. There is only one damsels showing signs of Ich as I lost my two new Angels last night. Pis*ed me off. But my main concern is getting the Ich to a tolerable level as I know Ich is always present just a matter of controling it. With my inverts I hope my new uv sterlizer and water changes will help with the Ich in the main tank for now.
