I think all of us lose things from time to time. However, that doesn't make us a terrible person. What we do after our mistakes is really what counts. If we stop the mistake from occuring and share our experience with others, I think the mistake was not totally worthless because we can all learn from others. Besides, why else would we all still be here?
As to my tip, in most cases, spending the extra money for a piece of equipment always pays off. The more expensive salt brands, salinity testing equipment (refractometers), etc. are more expensive for a reason. The more you spend in the beginning of this journey, the less you will spend during the journey correcting problems from the beginning.

my 40g has 70lbs of sand, and 16# of lr
i check my levels 1x a week, and i do 5g of water change per week.
i feed every other day, everybody is eating and pooping well. i clean out my cannister filter every 3 months or so.
i lost 1 fish back in april (my cj goby), that was the first since like, oct
the less i mess with the tank, the better it seems to do.
