Collecting Live Rock and Sand???

I was wondering if it would be ok to take live rock and sand from mexico when I go scuba diving and wrap the rock in wet newspaper and the sand in plastic bags to come home? If so how would I cure it when I got home and whatever else i need to do to it? I have many spare tanks to use. Please Help Me Out, Thanks.

youll have to check with customs and the local law. more than likely its going to be illegal to imort with out a license and can carry alot of jail time and fines if you try to. but if you do I wouldnt there is alot of polutants you could possible bring back to your tank. there are many cons and very few pros to that one. but the main one that free rock you collect can possibley cost you more than you are willing to pay. always check with local laws first and customs if bringing across a boarder.

agreed 100% also if you do end up getting it you dont need to cure it!!

Yeah I was deffinately going to check if it was illegal. Why wouldn't I need to cure it?

you will need to cure it if you brought it all the way back from mexico cause there will be dieoff in that amount of time. I just dont think your going to get the sanswer you want when you start checking legality of it.

your right im soory, what i ment was transport it in water, no shipping cost so water should be fine then no die off at all!! agian if its legal that is

you can buy a very large wooden idol and stash the LR inside, or do as the drug runners do and keyster it, however, think that may be a little uncomfortable.

Take in some salt water into your mouth, just slip some rocks in your mouth and go through customs you wont get caught. Plus you wont have any die off, haha j/k
Yeah you cant carry anything that is live, plants, certain foods, due to the fear of brining diseaes/bacteria to u.s. You have to get a permit to bring items if you want to plus i believe another permit if you want to bring in marine stuff. But, if your in mexico you can pay couple of bucks to those guys who give permits lol
