Awesome info jeo...do you know who makes it...the probe thing?
I usually just get people to do stuff for me when I travel because My two tank thing sits on a half wall and I have no cabinet underneath and the tank divides two rooms so it is seen on both sides. I try to have as little visible as possible in the way of contraptions.

I'm a college student as well. I don't know how your dorm works it but some turn off the power over winter break to save money, so you should check and make sure that won't happen. I would say whatever system that you use for a feeder or for a top off system that you use it for several weeks to make sure that it is working smoothly. I just took my fish home and they made the 4 hour trip.

i only had a 2.5 galllon fresh water when i lived in the dorms. i brought the thing home with during summers, left it at sinner's place during christmas and thanksgiving breaks.
no way would i move a saltwater tank back and forth, no way would i have a saltwater tank in our dorms (power goes off too much).
if you live in an apartment, then you don't have to be gone the whole break or if you live close enough, you can check on them once a week or so.
leave your lights on less while gone and you'll have less water evaporate. our 55gl evaporates maybe a gallon a week, nothing major, we can be gone a week or so and not worry about it. also, fish (or at least the ones we have) can go a week or so without being feed.
you can always set up a webcam to watch your fish, if you notice them acting funny, then go home and test the water and check them. (or at least you'll still be able to see your fish)

Sorry I really don't know where to find the probe, I read about it in a thread a long time ago. I will try to find it though.

Hey I just looked and found what I was looking for pretty easily. The devices I was talking about are usually called "level controllers" I found one for $50 and a nicer one for $80. if anyone wants the links emailed let me know, but you should be able to go to any big online store and type in level controller under search and find something.

thanks for the help guys.
Yeah, one of my room mate has fish tanks at home, he dont' drink. The other wouldn't be so moronic as to do so, but he don't drink either. THe last one though, i gave a death threat to just in case. He claims he doesn't get waisted but get's buzzed. I will have a balcony so he knows where his place is.
Once again, thanks for the help. I'm trying to sell my eel before the time comes. Worst comes to worst i make good friends with our neighbors :D

Don't they have a fish sitters service around there? I know here in Va all the resturants that have SW aquariums use them and local businesses too. They charge a flat rate per visit. But they do check out the water quality and carry R/O for a water change if need be also they know what there doing and adjust if needed so you can relax on your vacation and not worry about some clown dicking up your tank.
