Colt Coral fragging

Okay i need to frag my colt b/c he is just too big. He is now 9-10 inches tall and 8 inches wide. What i have done is placed a shell next to the coral about 2-3 days ago. Now it is connected pretty good to the shell but I need to cut the rest off from the parent to have about a 3x5 in two stalk with about 15 or so branches. So my question is what can i cut it with. I have to do it in my display tank b/c of it's size. Also how much do you think this frag would be worth. I probably need to frag it more than that but thats all i would do for now. You really wouldnt even notice a piece was missing from the coral

We've just always used a simple razor blade to frag our colt coral.
As far as the worth of the frag, it will be worth more in trade value than in retail value. My suggestion is to try to find someone in your area to trade frags with.
Our LFS only offered us like $20 for a colt frag of the size you are talking about.

as far as value that will differ upon where you trade it i highly reccomend you find a way to not frag it in the tank it is going to slime like crazy when you frag it and a sharp pair of scissors or some sort of sharp object would work great to cut it

USe a sharp, brand new, razor blade. Just slice it at a branch base. If you can't leave the frag attached to the shell or a rock, it can be rubber banded to a large turbo snail shell or stabbed w/ a toothpick and rubber banded to a rock. I would say it is worth a little more to someone if it attached to something. JMO.

Yeah its already attached to a sea shell i put beside it. How bad is the slime. I mean I can't really take it out b/c of no place to cut it in. My tank is too small to take out the water with the coral

I fragged mine in the display without any noticable slime, but I did it in a 125. The main part of the colt opened up the next day!:D

Let me rephrase my post:
When I fragged my colt, it only slimed on the coral itself. It did not release so much that it was excessively floating around in the tank. It seemed to stay on the cut part.

Okay i fragged it there was almost no slime at all. Probably b/c i didnt cut into the stalk. After about 5 minutes the parent was fully open and the frag was open in about 15-20. All looks good right now thanks for everyones help
