Combinations of fish for 30G tank

That really depends on the size of the fish and the filtration you have. I'm in the process of setting up my 29g (live rock is coming today! 
) and plan on eventually having four fish in it. Some gobies, for instance, only get up to an inch and a half long. If you had two of those, it'd basically equal one smaller sized fish. If you go by the "one inch of fish per five gallons" rule, you have six inches of fish to work with. You should be able to exceed that a little (conditions permitting) and be just fine.

you can strech the 1 inch per 5 gallons currently i have 2 clowns a coral beat and 2 damsels in my 55 and that totals to what 16 inches and that would be the "appropriate" level for an 80. Generally i go with around i inch per 3 gallons but you have to think about it a one foot grouper is gonna make a whole lot more waste than 12 1 inch clown gobies. Just go with about 1 inch per 3 gallon of "small" fish and thats what i gave you a total of 10 inches

The problem also is the "footprint" of the tank...if this is a 30 tall, then I am assuming it is a 29g, which is a 2 foot tank, versus a 30 long which is a 3 foot tank. 1 gallon difference in volume, but a big difference in room. If you get territorial fish, like clowns, I am not sure I would throw in damsels too.
