I have the sports package and HBO for all their cool shows like entourage and hard knocks plus all the other crazy mini shows they do. My cable has been out 1 time in the past 2 years and it has never not recoreded a show I asked it too.
Mine goes 187 in Colorado, thats phone, net 2 HD boxes, HBO and Encore.

I have comcast and pay over 150 and all I have is digital, encore, and internet. I do have a DVR which is a big hefty monthly fee. The DVR package only offers HD for 1 of my sets. The other set would be an additional $7.99. What modem do you use or do you rent? I've been renting mine, and would like to get a modem so I can ditch that monthly rental expense.

Cable and Satellite operate a little differently. Cable is basically a fixed 2-way radio. They constantly communicate back and forth. If they wanted to, the Cable Company knows exactly what your watching, what parts you rewind over and over, etc. As where Satellite is fixed signals back and forth. In theory, I could take my out of region DVR, to a differnt region where a football game was blocked out, and watch it there, without DirecTV knowing.
The DirecTV DVR's have a built-in modem and uses the phoneline to communicate. You really only need if you order PPV stuff by remote. I would be willing to bet most people don't have their DVR's hooked up to the phone. The installers don't even bother anymore.
We've done that in the past. We've taken a box from the DFW area down to houston. Because they like to black out the cowboys while the texans are "playing" (a term I use loosely)

Glad to see that I am not the only one paying 150ish for cable. I have all the regular channels, starz/encore premium channels, internet, 2 digital boxes and 1 HD box with dvr. I have Tivo in another room but it's paid off.

187 to watch T.V. every month..............wow. I don't consider myself to be a tightwad with my money, but there is no way I would spend anywhere near that amount. We just have the basic Dish service and I really only have that because we live too far out to get any T.V. reception at all, well that and I have to watch Fox News. LOL

my wife is tninking about switching us to some tv over the internet system, and going with netflix through our WII. it should bring us down to $30 for internet, $20 for the tv over the internet, and $10 for netflix, which will be a drop from 135 for tv and internet. i've been thinking about dish or direct tv

Don't you have to pay a monthly service with tivo?

$140 here, for our DirecTV Premier package, with every conceivable channel under the sun. If anyone is considering DTV, recommend the Choice Plus, its the Premier pack, minus the premium channels, and is only $84/mo. IIRC.

Well. I should had explained everything. When I bought my house I called Comcast to install the cable the day we were moving in. A guy showed up at like 4:30. He didnt want to do the work so he lied to me. Told me they had to dig and set up an appointment for a month later. I didnt know any better so I let it go. Then two weeks went by and I asked my neighbor about the cable. he said it came off the pole. I called back they checked and confirmed. I told them what had happened and how I thought it was ridciulous that they sent a lazy guy who lied right to my face. They gave me HBO for a year free. I have the triple play which was $99. Then the two boxes 1 had a dvr. The sports thing is $5 which is speed channel nfl channel. Its like $150 and some change. Now after Sept. It will go up as my HBO thing is up. I may end paying about $30 more. I dont blame comcast for 1 lazy worker. They made right by me and so for that plus never having any other issues I stay. Oh and I bought my own moden. I will get the name when I get home. This is from my phone

I bought the lifetime membership from a friend for like $150. So I never have to pay. Just have to hope Tivo doesn't go out of business.
