Coming Back to the Hobby!

Hurricane Rita (2005) & Hurricane Ike (2008) took me out of the hobby. Rita destroyed everything in the tank, when I couldn't maintain it after being without power for 4-1/2 weeks. Also lost my job of 16-1/2 yrs.and started working 12 hrs days/ 7days a week on cleanup crew ran by Corps of Engineers. House was damaged, but livable. Then 3 yrs later, Ike blew threw and again damaged the somewhat repaired house more, still livable but in need of much repair. I sold off my tanks, filed for assistance and was blessed with a smaller but new built home on my site after old house was torn down. Moved on new house on Nov 29, 2011. Yes almost 3yrs of paperwork from filing, approval & build. Wife recorded me a show called "Tanked" a few weeks ago and it has reignited the spark I had in my heart for the hobby. I have a storage building being brought in to make into a man cave, since my stuff will not go into the new house. I though what better time then now to get back into the hobby. I've acquired a couple of tanks, a 50g corner tank & a 55g rectangle, nothing close to the 120g I had, but I can't go that big at this time. I did save a lot of my skimmers, sumps, equipment, so I'm not starting with nothing, but getting excited. Will be asking about new ideas and any changes that have taken place while out of the hobby. Hopefully will be posting some pics along the way. Thanks for letting me share my story, I look forward to getting caught back up with where I left off yrs ago. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm wanting a reef tank set up, any new lighting ideas, circulation turnovers, water movement, etc is appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Wow three years to get them to rebuild. Crazy!!!
Welcome back to the hobby.
Check out T5 and LED lights. There have been lots of improvements in lighting. What kind of skimmer and power heads do you have in storage?
Good luck!!

Rio power heads & pumps. The skimmers are custom made by the guy who drilled my large tank.

Consider using your Rio pumps for mixing water and water changes and maybe just using one in the tank behind some rock work. There are better powerheads out there now other than the glorified "squirt guns" that rio powerheads are considered today. Look into Vortech MP40s if you have the money, otherwise Koralias do a nice job as well.
