When you say old how "Old" are you talking about - My home PC is technically 4.5 years old although I have replaced almost all of it by now including a new ethernet card about 9 months ago and it works perfectly

It could just mean that it cannot find a good connection with the cable. so you might check all the cables are tightly connected.
or maybe you just have conflicting IRQ's
go into your MOBO bios and free up some of the junk you dont use...
IE onboard printer (maybe you dont use a printer)
onboard firewire IEEE 1394
onboard serial ports
That will free up several IRQ's
Then check your device properties.
Have you recently installed windows again or done a restore?
You might just have a bad card.
I see no reason whatsoever that a PCI card would not work on an old computer.
PCI is PCI as long as you have a supported driver you will be ok.

All real good advice, however there are a couple of real easy checks that should be the first thing you do. First make sure it's seated in the slot good. Second, go into device properties and ensure it is enabled. Look at properties and you'll be able to see if it's a conflict as pwnag3 explains. If all is okay, uninstall it (delete). Reboot and be ready to install drivers if necessary. It will automatically recognize that the device exists and needs to be installed. If there is still no recognition, replace the card.
