Interested in having a lionfish with it being only 2-3inches when i get him. Will it work with 3 blue damsels and if not what other type of smaller species would work with the lion?

dog-face puffer,2 maroon clowns,powder-blue tang,3 damsels, dwarf lion, possible eel....all of which would be young or juvenile. LIke i said this is first salt tank and ive been reading and reading try to learn more just not sure any advice and ideas would be great .thank you.... also any comments or suggestions on this idea of havind black very fine sand for substrate and ive found some holey rock that i was thinking bout adding , also been told being fish only tank will not have to run a skimmer is this true??

Welcome to the boards!
Well, the so-called rule is: one inch of adult fish per 5 gallons, but you have to consider a lot more than just adult size... like how much room do they need for swimming, how much waste do they produce, etc.
SO, going by that "rule" that would mean you could have 11" of adult fish length. A pair of maroon clowns and 3 damsels would pretty much fill you up. Considering you don't want coral you could maybe add another small
fish or two. And remember, I don't mean the tiny size they are when you get them. I mean their potential adult size.
Lastly: a powder-blue tang needs more space than a 55 gallon tank provides.
