confused with hypo and refractometer!!

okay I ordered a ATC refractometer form PA online in order to do Hypo treatment in QT tank. I am confused because I thought that the SG should read 1.009. I also heard that the Salinity should read 14 ppt. Okay now on my refractometer Salinity at 14ppt is 1.010-1.011 SG. So which one should I measure??
The same for my display tank my refractometer reads SG 1.025 and the salinity reads about 33 ppt should I raise that to 35ppt which wil give me a SG of 1.027. I will appreciate any info regarding this because I am really really confused!!!!
Thanks
Michael

Go with the ppt measurement, as Terry said, measuring salinity is not effected by the water temp, thus you have the more accurate reading.

Thanks Terry and Beth. My Temperature in both QT tanks are 80 degrees, I also keep my display tank at around 80 - 81 degrees also. I was convinced that I didn't need to adjust SG for temperature when using a refractometer?? Right now I am at 1.010 which is equal to 14 ppt on the Refractometer. Should I stay at this point for 3 weeks. I don't think it is a good idea to lower to 1.009 because I think i will be at 13 ppt which can't be good. So 14 ppt even at 80 degrees is where I want to be am I correct? Also would you raise the salinity to 35 ppt in the display tank?
thanks so much

With my refractometer, it has SG on the left side and Salinity PPT on the right. Plus, doesn't a refract. compensate for temperature differences.

I've stuck my foot in my mouth recently with Refractometer readings.
The problem is that the scale is fixed and s.g. changes in relation to temp. ATC Refractometers adjust for temp and that makes the s.g. scale inaccurate unless your water is 68F.
Bottom line - ignore the s.g. scale and use only Salinity with ATC refractometers.
for non-ATC refractometers use the S.G. scale and look up the correct Salinity using a Temp/S.G. table.
