Confused with lights....

Hi all,
I have a Coralife Pro with 2x 150 Watt MH's and 2 90 watt Ac's.
I was only running the MH's about 5 hours a day. I recently turned them off because I was having some extra algae growth and the summer storms were causing power outages and the turn off and back on was concerning me with the MH's.
Anyways, my tank is actually looking healthier with the MH's off. More coraline starting to grow back again, hard corals that were white are getting color back to them again. I had been thinking I was having water quality issues.. but it appears it may have been the lights.
It's a 72 gallon bow front, so it's a deep tank. About 20" deep. The MH's are always about 6-7 inches off the water.
Did I really have too much light?

I have the same tank with 2x250's how old is the light setup? It shouldn't hurt anything unless you have certain corals to high and your lights are not acclimated.

I had a 260 watt PC set up for about 1.5 years.
I've had the MH set up for the last 6 months or so. It came with old bulbs. I left them in on purpose and started with 1 hour of MH's for the first 3 days or so.. then increased an hour every other day up to about 6 hours a day.
Then bought all new bulbs about 2 months ago. Did the same thing, started with 2 hours MH's.. increased about 1 hour a day. But ended at 5 hours a day MH's.
running just the AC's is the lowest light level i've ever ran and some corals that came on my LR 2 years ago are looking the healthiest they have ever been.
I'm very confused. Even my zoos are opened up more and looking better.

SunPaq 10K's.
but honestly just running the 2 90 watts is making everything look better than even when I was running the 260 watt PC set up.
