Confused....

I've been reading and looking at different sumps, but I still not understanding how to hook up my sump properly.
My sump will get a water from my build in overflow. Sump is about 2 feet below the display tank.
Then it will go through a series of different height buffers.....
The part I don't understand is how the skimmer and the return water pump is connected to each other ( if they have to be connected)
The worst part off all is neighter skimmer or the water pump comes with at least some kind of instruction or manual.
Please, can someone explain this to me clearly?
Btw my display is 50g and sump about 18g

the sump should have a space for the skimmer to operate with whatever water is dropped into the tank. the skimmer should then dump its water back into the sump so that it can be re skimmed or sucked up by the return water pump going back into your tank. your overflow is only going to pump as much water as flows down into it. you can either place the water pump in the sump with the skimmer or drill a hole in the sump so that you can have a wetdry pump doing the work. a typical high flow power head can take care of your needs. youll just hve to fit hoseing to the outake of the powerhead. in the end its up to you.

Thanx for the answer but it's still a little unclear to me......water drains from overflow to the sump then it has to get to the skimer and back to the sump before it goes back to display?

think of the skimmer as a stand alone closed loop water pump. meaning that the water goes in a circle back to its original destination. your skimmer should have an in and an out. you simply place the in and the out so they take and return water to the sump. then the main return pump can take skimmed water returning or whatever water is in the sump at the time.
help?
