Converting basic hood light to MH?

I'm new to SW. Know nothing about lights, other than I need MH or T5 for corals, but can't afford to spend big bucks. I'm somewhat handy (I can replace a garbage disposal by myself, change out toilet flushing assemblies, assemble propane grills, and almost anything else that has specific directions). I've never done anything electrical. Is there a reasonable way someone like me could convert my basic hood lighting to something that would support corals and anemones?

depends on the size of the hood. if it's "Tall" > 12 inchs, you could mount MH's in there, if it's < 12, your going to want to go with T5's...
is it a light bar or hood?

um then no...first thing is that VHO's can get a little hot, MH's will probably melt the screws that anchor the bulb to the hood. or it would turn your hood into pudding.
You would be better off (taking the lid off) and getting a light bar that mounts to the top/sides of your tank...
your looking at like 275 for a PC system online.
after you get the retro kit, and slice and dice the black plastic hood up, then mount the VHO's in there, your already up to almost 180$...and it looks sloppy.
check out the classifides on this forum, there are a lot of PCbars on there.
