Can it be done? If so how?? I just picked up a brand new, never used marine land powerfilter and was wondering if i could convert it to a refug for my 20gal reef...

Take the filter and lid out and add chito and sand or mud. Cut the flow down some add light if needed and your done.

there shoud be a nob on the top to turn the flow down and like said above just leave the lid off if you have a good light fixture you should have enough light bach there but if not just get a clip on light and your good

so there is no actual filter floss to catch the lose particals of waste? do you put a carbon sock in there too?
ETA: I actually was looking at the pump and dont see where i could slow the flow down...

I have never had that type of filter so I would need to see a pick of it. Also to be honest you will probably be ok without turning it down. Most hob filters dont reall have a lot of flow to begin with.

You can use a carbon sock and I would if I had no other mechanical filter.
The reason for slowing down the water is to keep any sand or mud from being washed out into the main tank. So if you can't cut the flow back some you may have some trouble with mud clouding the tank. I did this with an AquaClear Power Filter and moded the intake.

That is true but what is he point of even putting sand or mud in there. The is no real benefit unless you have 6'' or better and in a hob that dont leave much room for chetao. I would use a little rubble rock and chetao. I have no mechanical filtration in my 180 with no problems

is rubble rock crushed live rock? it is a HOB and isnt very big.. how much chetao should we get? I would need a light for it as my light fixture doesnt cover the filter portion.. just the front cover.

Rubble rock is I would say about golf ball sized rock give or take. As far as chetao goes I would get a hand full and keep it pruned. By pruning it when it fills up the hob filter just grab and tare some out. For light check out what I have n my 55 fuge just cheap clipong lights from the home of depots and a spiral bulb. The bulb is daylight spectrum 6500K found pretty much any where. The pic isnt the best but you can see the light under my tank ad I am sure you get the idea of what they are. As you can see I have plenty of chetao (enough to fill an 10 gal tank) there cheap and work very well. You will only need 1 of course. You can get them for less than 15 bucks with bulb and everything

No reason, with a mud you would only need one inch.
I would use a little rubble rock and chetao also.
