Good Morning, I was having a problem in my Nano tank with the surface film. So when i was at the LFS i was going to get a bigger pump thinking that may be the problem. I have a Maxi Jet 1200 running in the back for this 24Gal Nano tank. But i noticed a Attachment for the Fluval Filter called Surface Skimmer Attachment. Mind you im not running that filter on it, But the tube that comes off of it fit right in the bottum of the Powerhead. And guess what my surface is crystal clear!
Thought id share this with you guys if your having the same issues. It might benifit you as well.

Do you have any pics. I would love to see the setup. I would like to do something like that, but it is easier to get the parts already made.

I'm not exactly sure what pieces you're talking about. I do know that the nano cubes have an attachment that uses the water coming through to the back chambers to hold it into place. This attachment helps to skim water off the surface to stop that build-up of garbage.
