i currently am running 2 icecap 442's over my 150g. i also recently moved from my apartment into my new house. this new house is not ventilated very well and im not sure how ling it will be before i fix this issue... anyhoo my tank is at 82f right now and i was looking to install some fans into the hood to cool things down. my question is whats the dif between the "icecap fan" and a regular computer fan. the ice cap fan costs like $50.00 bucks!!! i want to use regular fans and hook them into the port on the icecap balast. will this work? is there a problem doing this?
i should have put this into the diy forum but now that im done typing the post i dont know how to do this.

i use basic computer fans as well. I think they cost $12 a piece and they work great.

if you want a higher quality fan without Icecap's price go to alliedelectronics.com and look for Orion brand fans, there are many models and run off 120v, I got 4 Orions and bought a daisy chain cord so all 4 runs off 1 plug, I used to work with PC's a lot and many PC fans are low quality and won't last you long, the orions are heavy duty and have a solid metal housing

I run 4-4" computor fans from RadioShack on a 220 that I do maintenance on. They were about $15 each and work fine. I wired a pair of them into the same electrical plug and have had no problems with them at all. Fairly quiet.....and they operate on individual timers to come on shortly after the MH's come on. Then shut down about a hr after the MH's go off.
On my reef I use a pair of 4" PFO fans that were more expensive but came with installation hardware and a metal cover for the blade...and a pre-wired plug. Cost more...and they look better for exterior use...but performance wise the RadioShacks are about the same...the PFO's may be a little quieter...and the PFO fans are wired to individual timers also..
