cooling water, kitty safe!

Okay, I know how to cool my water, Remove glass and add fans, run lights at nights, ect.
However, if I remove the glass, a kitty will end up in the tank. Currently he can't jump and he's hiding, so I'm not worried about the 55gl in the living room (at this time), and I can shut the door to the 75gl, but once I move the 75gl to my room, I won't be able to keep the kitty out...I didn't have the kitty last summer to worry about, tank temps are starting to raise...
So, is there a way to cool my water, without running the ac lower, and preventing the kitty from ending up in the water? He sleeps in my room, so it's not like I can watch him all the time.
(I'm having problems searching, so if you post a link, that would be fine).
Thanks...I'd really like to buy fish once my tank is moved, but I can't unless I can controll the temp. :happyfish
Also, is it normal for the temp to be different on different sides of the tank? One side, lower, says 78, the other side a little higher says 82...(I just added the new temp gauge last night, the one that's reading 78...I'm not sure if I need to remove my glass yet or not).

that's what I was told few years ago, but I can't find the thread, could you explain the eggcrate more? or point in the right direction? I don't care what the set up looks like, I only need it in the summer.

Sinnersgirl,
I think any hardware store sells it. Home depot or Lowes is a good start.
It is usually white and has approx. 1/2 inch squares. Does not look bad, and will help keep kitty out of the pool!
FYI, the San Diego zoo sells a very unique product made from the waste products of their bigcats. It is basically refined and sanitized lion/tiger poop!

Has no smell that humans can detect although animals can smell it. They instinctually recognize the scent of large predators and will not go near anything with this scent. I used it once to keep the nieghbors dog for pooing in front of my mailbox. Worked like a charm and I could not smell a thing. They sell it to help raise money to fund the zoo expenses. I don't think it would work for your aquarium but maybe you could use it to keep the cat out of areas in your home or certain rooms.

Lighting dept at HD or Lowes. Had one of my cats break the glass top and go for a swim! She never went near the tank again!

Yeah, me neither. But since she was complaining the cat was peeing all over the house I thought what the heck. At least this doesn't smell.
Besides I thought I would show off that I knew something unique!

I guess I'm pretty lucky my cats leave my tanks alone.

I'd venture to guess that IF your cat fell into the tank it would be the first and last time that ever happened! I used to have a cat that liked to sleep on top of the toilet seat (Dont ask me why) One night I had some friends over and one of the guys left the seat up after using the bathroom. All I remember hearing was a loud splash and then seeing a soaking wet cat streak across the living room, into my bedroom and under the bed. After that I never once saw that cat on the toilet seat again!!

I posted a similar question a few days ago in the equipement and DIY section and no one answered. People read the post but didnt reply. :notsure:

Could you put screen on top of the tank? Would keep the cat out and let the hot air out of the tank. I may have that problem too with my 2 kittens.

Some pet stores sell a heavy screen for the tops of reptile and rodent cages. That might be a good option.

Love it! He doesn't bother my 75gl, he likes the drink the water from the 55gl fw is my guess. We're working on that. we figured out he likes big bowls...not little cat size bowls, and not fresh water goofy me was giving him fresh water 3x's a day. Now I switch between bowls and change one every day. Lol, go figure.
I was just worried because, there was glass, and not there's not...
Sweet idea about the screen...
and moby, I like the idea about the spray, I was thinking that would work....
thanks! I'll go to lowe's this weekend, my small town got one a few weeks ago!!

screen over a saltwater tank is a bad idea, can you say corrosion and rust....
Eggcrate is also light diffuser sold in the Commerical lighting section (close to the lumber in HD) of home improvement stores, just use a pair of wire cutters to cut it to size.
It is typically white, although I have a source for black in my area.
Bet the kitty would only jump in the tank once though...

I agree. The screens sold to cover reptile tanks are metal; they can't be plastic, or they would melt under the heat lamps. Trust me, I know. Egg crate is a good idea, though. I think I will be jumping on that band wagon.
Sorry for dragging up a post that seemed to have ended, but it's not often I get to reply knowledgably to a post in this forum. I did it for my ego....

Well, we went out of town this weekend (with kitty) so I didn't make it to lowe's...good info about the screen, I'll go with eggcrate.
will lights melt it? I just have regular lights and a moon light, nothing fancy.

true, but who knows what damage he could do...besides freaking the fish out...Though we've got him drinking from a bowl, so he's less likely to jump up looking for water...
