Copepod Light Requirements

Do copepods(sp?) need a minimum wattage to grow? One of my tanks only has a standard 15 watt aquarium light on it(35 gal.). Will copepods still grow either at the normal rate or at all?

I don't think "pods" need any light at all to grow.I have found them thriving in between the filter pads, where very little/if any light at all gets in...

I agree with Salty, I have a 5 gal with very minimal lighting and the pods seem to be very happy and growing.

I just saw the biggest "pod" in my life, here's the story. I bought a 440g tank that I intend to turn into a reef. I made the stand and canopy and added some extra support slabs under that room in my house. Then I bought 7-400w metal haildes, and 8-48" 96w atinic tubes for total of 8.1w per gallon. Then I bought all 500lbs of LR and 413lbs of live sand, and 6 buckets of Instant Ocean. I then purchased a turboflotor 5000 skimmer. I have a 180 that now has been converted into a calupera refugium, that will also serve as a grow out tank for cardinal fry(pajama, banggai, flame)and clown fry (tomato and percula). I purchased 6 starter mysis and grammarus shrimp cultures from ************ (3 for main tank and three for refugium)and 10 copepod cultures (7 for refugium and 3 for main tank.) This is where the creepy stuff began to happen. I plan on letting the tank mature for about a year, to allow the copepods and mysis to establish populations large enough to sustain themselves once the tank starts to be stocked! Last night when the lights went out every thing was in order, and I removed a curlique anemone I discovered on the live rock! I am usually comng home from work when the lights come on in the morning (yep the graveyard shift at the post office) so I usually peek in to see what is gong on at the simulated "dawn". That was when I saw the about 5 pods about 3/4" long with what seemed to be big eyes! Could anybody tell me what these are, they downright scared me!

LOL !
FishGod - for gods sake man ! Anyone with the guts to take on a 440 gallon reef shouldn't let a few mega-amphipods scare ya !
LOL just kidding :D
I would bet they are just very large species of amphipods - and yes they do get to be 3/4 inch in length
Keep us posted on your 440 reef - sounds incredible ;)

Mr. Salty stick to what you know! There are species of saltwater mysis, and that my friend you can take to the bank! Landmeier what is your email address? I know the messageboard is a learning experience for everyone, but when you get ratings peope without real experience, they can, and will use references to sound good but when a topic is brought up that isn't covered they started saying things made up upon assumtions! How can one say they aren't pretty sure that Mysis are freshwater shrimp when their are large numbers of unidentified arthropod species? One who listens and learns feels better than one who speaks and is proven wrong!

FishGod,
If you do not mind, I would like to do some one on one chatting, I have been interested in learning more about mysis/mysid shrimp, copod cultures, etc. I would like to get back in to seahorses, mandarin gobies, etc., but they need live food. My e-mail address is kelly@pathway.net
Your new tank sounds fantastic, the funds are a little short on this end for such a nice setup. I wish you the best of luck with it. When it gets up to speed, I am sure all of us would enjoy pictures!!!
Thanks
