Generally, the reason ppl recomend 6 + months for tank to become established is because it takes this long for most micro and macro organisiums to populate a large enough population of themselfs...The pods, worms, tiny seastars, and other type buggies we all like haveing in our tanks...most lay eggs or release larvae into the water and they have to grow and populate and so on and so on...takes time and also there has to be safe places for them to live to do this.....most everything ( the buggies ) as well as crabs, snails, corals and fish, will feed on everything else at different stages of their growth along the way and this cause more time to be needed....Tangs and Clowns will feed on them too if they see them....
If you cant see any pods in you tank on close observation then I would say that you dont have enough....
as recomended, a refugium ( the name itself is given for a reason ) is the best way to allow these organisiums to thrive so as to have a healthy supply for all...
They do not get mangled in the pumps but many mechanical filters ( sponge, fiber, floss, ect. ) do trap them...
