Copepods???

I received a free bag of these with my order and was in the proces of moving my tank so I waited for three days before I put them in my sump.
I could not find anywhere that said they need to be kept in the fridge or any info. So I just added them. After about 5 minutes my skimmer started going crazy like really bad. It has been about three hours and it is still getting allot of stuff and besides the skimmer going crazy my whole house stinks.
Anyone have any ideas or has anyone had these in their tank before?
thanks ahead of time.

Ok since we are on this subject I want to jump in...
Right now my DT is empty except for inverts. If I added some pods how would their population do in about a month with no fish present?

What inverts?
Tank has cycled, right? This is an established tank, just devoid of fish?
I would expect them to do well if you ghost feed the tank.
Their numbers will increase and decrease with time. Kind of a population cycle. If your tank cycles, they may not like the nitrates, but neither will any of your other inverts.

I never saw any of them moving even when i first go the bottle. So do you think my protein skimmer will just clean them out or do you think I need a water change now? Nothing has died.

2 cleaner shrimp, Some larger hermits and large turbo snails. The tank has been cycled and had fish in it but I took them out to hypo them due to a horrible ick outbreak. So now the tank with 125 lbs of LR will be empty of fish for at least 6 weeks.

lol i think you just got a bag of dead raw meat. your feeding crew should like it. i personally would shut off the skimmer myself. clean it.
then let the tank crew eat them for the next 2 weeks. while doing 30% water changes every 3-5 days.
or......skimmer back on. your house stink basicly cause your foaming up rotting flesh. but its the fastest way to clean them out. option 2 stinks but works fastest. next time see if they are alive. pods are great to have.

While cleaner shrimp will eat pods, I hardly think they would deplete your population. While my 100g was fish free, the pods swam around the entire tank in broad daylight.

Speaking of pods....
I've put a ton of them in my tank. The most recent batch (another 1,000) I put in the refugium. I even put some in the wet section of my wet/dry filter as it's full of homemade rock rubble. (Water flow in sump is DT, mechanical filter, drip plate, wet/dry, refugium, reservoir, DT)
I have not seen a single one in the tank or the refugium, not even at night. Every once in a while, I'll find one in the bottom of a bucket after changing filter pads.
On the other hand, my mandarin goby sure seems fat and happy, so I reckon they're in there somewhere, reproducing as they see fit.

They are detritovores. They are an important part of your tank's natural filter system.
"
Table 1. Some properties of common aquarium detritivores. Each category may contain several species. Sizes and properties refer only to aquarium animals, maximum sizes in nature are generally much larger.
Animal Type Feeding Type
Common Name Scientific Term Particle Scraper Particle Feeding Maximum Size
Surface Subsurface
Amphipod Amphipod X X X 1 - 10 mm
Copepod Harpacticoid
Copepod X X X 0.1 mm
Nassarius Nassarius X (carrion feeder) 1 cm
Cerith Snail Cerithiid Snails X X X 3 cm
Mini-Stars Brittle Star = Amphiurid Ophiuroid X 1 - 15 mm
Non-brittle Star = Asterinid Asteroid X X 10 mm

Worms (At various times, worms in all of these groups have been called spaghetti worms.) Terebellid

Well, that chart didn't copy very well. I wish I could post the link.

Ok...
Google this phrase... "The Infamous Detritivore"
Then click on the first result in the list. Very nice article.

IDK bout that. IDK how much tiny copepods would decay, but I would think it's possible for them to cause problem with water chemistry. It won't hurt to leave the skimmer on, and if you're worried about the smell, i would clean it everyday.
Besides that, think the dead pods would probably sink anyway, so the CUC will still get to have their fun.
Do a WC. It can't hurt. If the ammonia goes up, do more WC's. Depending on how bad it is, you can decide how much, and how often.
I'm pretty new too, but this iis just my advice

I am not sure what bag you purchased. But the ones that are sold on this site expire in 3 weeks from the start date which is located on the bag. If you are within the date range or even little late you should be fine. They will just reproduce in the bag. They are fine at shelf temperature. No need to refridgerate. Personally I do not like the bags. I never see any life in them. I do use them occassionally. But I think I am getting jipped!

Strange it was definitely within three weeks. But I never saw life in the bag. something was definitely wrong like I said my protein skimmer went crazy and my house smelled like I had a dead body in here somewhere.
But good news the water is now clear and the body has been removed. lol
