what does copper in a system do? because i just bought a fish earlier, about an hour ago, and the guy said not to add the water from the bag into my tank because they run copper in the tank the fish came out of and i kind of want to know why they would run copper in their tank . . .

its used to kill parasites. like ick. it will kill inverts too.

It is a good idea not to put any LFS water into your tank for just that reason and many others. Copper will kill inverts and corals. You can also bring home unwanted parasites like ick. Stick with your tank, your water and it will save alot of problems in the future.

Start the drip acclimating process then dip the fish out to release into your tank. :happyfish
