CoRaL bEaUtY????

What do you think could have happened to my coral beauty angel? He started looking a little sick a few days ago so I put him in my quarantine tank. He was just lingering in one spot not swimming too much, he didn't have any white spots, but under his gills on his side looked like they were rotting or eaten out. It was weird. Anyone have any clue what this was? BTW--he died yesterday
And everyone else in the tank is fine and the water paramaters were good.

Sounds like his gills were burned from ammonia or nitrite poisoning. Are you sure the quarantine was cycled?

Yes it was cycled, ammonia andnitrite were at 0 and nitrate was at 20 on both tanks and his gills started looking like that while he was in my display tank.

I agree about the ammonia or nitrite poisoning, but it could just have been ich in the gills and the fish could not fight it. FYI, testing chemicals do go bad over time and I've known people to get wrong readings from old chemicals. You might want to bring a sample of your water to a LFS and see what their readings are against yours just to be safe ... Are their any other fish in the tank? If so, how are they acting/looking?
Also, IMO 20ppm is too high for nitrates, I would not let my tank get that high.

I have 2 clowns, a brittle starfish and some crabs/snails. They all seem fine though. I did a WC and my nitrates dropped to like 15. I have been battling high nitrates for about 6 months now lol. I brought a sample of water to my LFS and they got the same results that I got.

How long did you have the Coral Beauty for? I'm glad that you were able to have the LFS test your water just to be sure, you never know and it's an easy rule out. Like the guy above me asked, are you running a skimmer?
IMO, I'd run a skimmer if you are not and do more frequent water changes until you get the nitrates under control. Also, carbon media, specifically Chemi Pure Elite helped out my tank, a lot.

i amnew to this hobby, but I had a problem with the nitrates until I removed all my bioballs from my tank. That cleared all my nitrates and it reads 0 from that a few days after until now about one year without the balls. Good luck
