what are the requirements for a coralife ss125 in a sump? im thinking is it best to put it in the sump or sitting next to the sump, and how high does it have to be sitting in the water?

In sump is fine. I prefer mine in my sump so if the skimmer overflows for some reason, it will overflow in the sump, not on my carpet. I would run it in 8-10" of water.

could you set it off to the side so i could have more volume in the sump? what would happen if i did set it off to the side?
You could do that. I had a 20 gal with a 10gal sump like that, but it sucked cleaning it up. The only time it overflowed was when I fed Cyclopeeze, I learned to turn off the skimmer from then on when I fed my corals.
its best to set it IN the sump because sooner or later it WILL (not might) overflow and you dont want that on your floor. also it would be good if you can get it in a section of the sump where the water level maintains 1 height so that you dont have to keep adjusting the knob on the skimmer
I would laso run it in the sump, in about 10" of water (for more water volume in the system). However, with the Coralife, you will have to keep the skimmer pump intake within about 3" of the water surface, or it will not draw air properly.
Better off in the sump.I have my 220 corallife hanging on the side of my sump and it has over flowed twice on me.Not a bad skimmer for the money but they area little tricky and do get out of whack pretty easy.
