Coraline-O-Mine (pics)

My 125 g is experiencing a coraline explosion. I am glad, but I wish I knew why it is doing so well.
I have been working on this tank since April. The rock is aragocrete, ie home made.
Midway through the initial diatom outbreak, which is still in progress, I got this explosion of coraline out of now where. Within a week of showing up, it is nearly everywhere.
This pic is a few days old. It is much more spread today. You can clearly see the streaks of coraline algae.
Any thoughts?

nice rock build up (saw the thread) but considering its the 4th month mark I wouldn't really call that a coralline "explosion". around the 3rd month is typical when it begins to take off. the reason its not an "explosion" is you start at a disadvantage with predomanently base rock opposed to liverock where every piece already has at least some trace coverage to start out with. you got a nice dusting though
In a month or two you can call it an explosion although you are clearly excited its spreading now

make sure your calcium levels are good and it will keep growing. so much so you will have to scrape it off.
But sweet looking tank!

ok been dying to ask, why the coliquial screen name? I have yet to figure out what you actually meant by it. I know what the translations are, but with out the intent or syntax I still dont know what your screen name is..

Hey ReefkprZ, no great story behind it, but I am happy to tell it. I served as a missionary for my church 12 years ago, where I learned to speak Spanish. Each day we knocked a bunch of doors, and were usually poletily told 'vaya pues'.
In English it would be like saying 'whatever'. When I got home, I began using it as my screen name and it has just sorta stayed with me. The nice thing is that it is never taken when I sign up on a new website.

By explosion, I mean that it was not there a week ago, and now it is everywhere. Those pics are a couple days old. It is now looking very purple all over my rockwork.
In other words, the coraline exploded into my tank all of a sudden.

You mention calcium. What is the effect that calcium has on coraline? I wonder if the natural hardness of concrete (which is in part what this rock is made out of) is helping, since concrete has a lot of natural calcium in it.

coralline growth uses calcium. Thats why the main ingredient of the product "Purple Up" (besides water) is calcium. But you need to check alkalinity if your going to check calcium. Since you have a FOWLR tank, you dont have to worry about low calcium affecting corals. But low calcium will slow coralline growth and may cause it to turn white.
