So I got a new MH lighting fixture a couple days ago and im noticing a brown color forming on the tops of some of my rocks. Wondering if this is possibly the beginning stages of coraline?

No. Sounds more like an algae bloom from your new lighting.
Is this a horrible thing? Is there anything I should be doing to battle this or just let it run its course?

algea is not horrible...it is normal...sounds like your tank is just having some growing pains...as previously stated, a clean up crew should take care of it...

How long are you running your new MH's? Everything photosynthetic is going to thrive under your halides unfortunately this also means some nuisance algae. Every one has battled or is battling some type of algae. Beef up your clean up crew if needed, do your water changes and run those halides for about 4 hrs a day or less. When you get over the algae bloom/s then you can run them longer if want to. I personally never run mine over 4hrs a day and run my vho's for about 10hrs. That is just my preference.

Right now there at 6 hours a day but its a MH only fixture (sunpod) so theres no ho/vho supplemental. Maybe 5 hours of run time on the halides?

i had the same problem...its an algae bloom. i reduced my lighting schedule untill it was under control. turbo snails are GREAT...mine cleared my rock in no time at all of the gunk

It can be a little tricky when that is your only light source. What light dependent corals do you have? Running them only 5 hrs shouldn't hurt anything you have in there. This will only be temporary until you get things acclimated to the new lighting. Just monitor your corals and anemone(if you any). Just don't skimp on your water changes because that will help remove some of the fuel for your algae bloom as well.

I have a very small watermelon frag in there but thats really it. Im trying to take things very slow so that I can do it right the first time.
So what you guys are saying is once the tank gets more "acclimated" to the new lights I will be able to run them for longer periods of time?
How long does this process usually take?
PS - I do a weekly 5 gallon water change.
