Corals? A few questions.

Hi all, I have a 55 gallon that is finally starting to become a 55 reef. I've had a gsp for a while but the colony is small so it wasn't anything to go crazy for. Then I purchased a large mushroom rock and they have spread around my tank, looks great! But I finally got my first NICE coral, a small frogspawn. They are such fun corals.......... haha but I have some questions about corals. Frogspawn is SPS right? Well I know some corals have stinging tentacles (I think frogspawn...). Does this mean I can't put it closer to other SPS or to any corals? Will it do OK if it is near some mushrooms/GSP? Well, for a simpler question: What corals sting? and what do they sting? and how close can I put them to other corals? Example, is it bad to put 2 SPS close but OK to have a SPS and softie?? Just fill me in on all the basic knowledge I need to start using corals. THANKS!!!

Frogspawn is actually LPS and it is fairly aggressive. It has pretty long sweepers and WILL sting. Depending on the size id say give it at least 4-6 inches from any other corals. Frogspawn have pretty big sweepers. Mushrooms should be ok but keep an eye out to see if theyre getting stung. Dont worry, youll know if they are by their looks. You could try a hammer or torch close to it. They are the same genus or something so alot of times they get along but you gotta watch even them.
That being said, each 1 is different so watch them and see if you see the sweepers and how long they are. My galaxea and frogspawn seem to have called a truce and let each other be even though they are pretty close.

i can only answer a few of you questions, no frogspawn is not a SPS, its a LPS, yes they do sting and will kill pretty much any coral if its tenticles are touching it

OK so if you have a lps (or stinging coral), they can or cannot be close to another lps? Are lps the only corals that sting? thanks!

Most LPS need room but it depends. torch, frogs, hammers definitely need room. But like i said , these 3 MAY be able to be close to each other.
Any other specific ones ask me and ill tell you if they need room

what kind of corals are brains? and also, can you just name off the most common corals that sting? and if a coral doesnt sting, can I keep it right up next to other non-stingers? lol thanks again for all the replies!

brains are LPS, the most common stinger are frogspawn, torch, and hammers, yes you can keep non stinging corals next to each other most of the time

Yes nonstingers can be close.
Plate, bubble,brain, galaxea, goniopora all sting or have pretty long sweepers
actually, candy cane and trumpets are the only non stinging lps i can think of :notsure:
Anyone else have any others?

ok this is a really dumb question but other than other corals, what do stinging corals sting? do they sting fish, inverts, people?? lol sorry its a really dumb question

pretty much most LPS can sting. its just a matter of their tenticles being long enough to reach anything. most brain, candycane/trumpet, short tenticle plate ect can sting but their tenticles wont be able to reach anything placed close to them. Hammer, torch, frogspawn, flowerpot, long tenticle plate, bubble, elegance, galaxea or most of the LPS with long tenticles or polyps need room to ensure they dont touch anything. and those corals that dont sting still need room not to be stung. leathers may let off toxins, some mushrooms may let off mucus or toxins, some yellow polyps can sting.

fedukeford, thanks, i havent felt my frogspawn either, but I just got a LT plate and I'm wondering about it......
stanlalee, thanks i think i have a good feel on which I can handle alot and which I should be more careful with!
Does anyone else know if corals sing fish, inverts, people, or just other corals?? thanks!
