I dont understand because the people at the fish shop told me that i need a couple hundred watts to keep the coal, yet i have just been using the basic florecent lighting and have been doing great and its only 30 watts. I dont understand how these things work?

as stated above how long?? it can take quite some time for a coral to melt away. also if its shrooms or zoanthids it is very ossible that they can live. they wont thrive but they might live

How big is your tank. A rough guide is 3 watts per gallon for softies and 5 or so for stonies. Most use metal halides for stonies. Where are you in KC? I am in Lenexa.

eh, i wouldnt trust that 3 watts per gallon or 5 per gallon stuff... i do just fine with 175 over a 60 gallon... which is under 3 watts per gallon and i have SPS, LPS, softies... all grow very well... also a clam doing seemingly well in there as well... (though it's only a gigas)

Which is exactly why it is a rough guide.

I have had the Xenia for about 1 month of so and it is spreading and is thriving. The shrooms i have are open all the time and look like they are doing great and i have had them for about 2 1/2 weeks.

No. I am using 4 24". They are 65 watts each. There is a local site. Do a Kansas City search on this board and you will find it.
