just got my 54 gal corner tank and stand. thanks to all you for help in answering my many questions. BUT, they sold me a Amiracle-100 filter, but it does not fit in the corner stand. does anybody know of any other options, or is there a smaller filter that might fit in the stand (it is a 28" quarter circle) and still do the job for a reef tank?

yeah, build your own sump(any tank or rubbermaid container that will fit into the cabinet will do) and add a skimmer, forget the filter, you won't need it, just lots of rock, sand(i prefer a dsb) and a skimmer with a sump and some powerheads for water movement
just be sure to get the sump n befor you fill hte tank, in case you have to put it in form teh top of the stand, it is apain to try it with a full tank sometimes
HTH and good luck

Can you stick a small aquarium like a ten gallon in the stand to use as a sump? I am not sure what a 28" quarter circle is. What side is 28"?
Is that one of those All-Glass tanks? Those are cool. Did you get the corner overflow option?
Lastly, they sold you the tank, stand with a filter that doesn't fit??!!??!!
Oh boy.

oh yeah, if you did not get he overflow built in, see if you can find somewher to drill it and build the overflow into the tank(before filling, it is relatively cheap, like 50 bucks), it in my opinion is safer than a hang on(i really wish i had done that before filling the tank)and the built in's take up less space

oh, my fault. the corner stand has 28" sides but can only use about a 15"square on the inside of it due to the corner triangle shape

i know everyone has there own ideas of what is best but i know what is working best for me right now is a fluval 304 .. a 404 would be better for that size tank though... but you have to look at what is best for you ..BigAlsOnline.com has some good deals on filters

Damn, that is tight! This is going to be tricky. To answer your question, a sump will allow you to pull a lot of hardware out of your tank and put it in there.
In this case, you going to have to shop around or go to a plastic shop and build one yourself with sheets of plastic cut to shape.
With those dimensions I am pretty sure a 10 gallon tank won't work. A five gallon might, but I am not so sure if you will have enough room in it for your protein skimmer and anything else (heater, chemi-pure bags, floss or sponge, float valves, etc.)
Plus you probably want to be able to hold more water than a five gallon tank acting as a sump.
Therefore, my suggestion would be to go to a hardware store or Kmart or something and look at plastic containers. You might find one that will work great. Take a look at Broomer's refugium. It was made with a rubbermaid container.
Otherwise you may be forced to build one yourself. This can be intimidating, but the benefit is that you will have maximum sized sump in your stand.
Keep me posted, and good luck!
