My live rock sucked cause it had to sit in a container for like 2 months beore i put it in a tank, but i have never had corralline in either of my tanks. i know purple up helps, but is this because of the live rock not having any on it or something else?
and if i buy a few pounds of rock from an lfs iwht corralline on it and add it to the tanks, will that get it started good?
thanks in advance.

adding something with coraline on it will help seed the tank, but what are your cal. levels, my tank really took of after I started dripping kalk

buy some rock with coraline on it, then just scrape it in your tank to help it spread. Make sure your water levels are correct first though.

Coraline needs to be introduced to the tank first. If you keep your calcium around 400 to 450 it should start to spread.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I always seem to get Corraline Algae growing on dark surfaces (black plastic overflow cover, powerheads, etc) noticeably quicker than on light-colored surfaces. Do any of you notice the same thing?

Not really, my coraline grew on my LR first..However if you have actinic lighting on a separate line, turn them on first as part of your light cycle, for about an hour to an hour and a half before your daylights come on. And again leave them on for the same amount of time after the daylights shut off. Its been proven that coraline grows faster under the actinic light spectrum.

You could buy 3-4 pounds of "Garfs Grunge" and mix it into your substrate. It's chock full of broken bits of shell and rock fragments with all kinds of Coraline algae.

Greetings

I have my lights set such that the actinics (260W total) come on at 9:00 AM and the MH's (300W total) come on at 11:00 AM. The MH's go off at 7:00 PM and the actinics at 9:00 PM (the moonlights are on from 9:00 PM until 9:00 AM).
I do have corraline growth on the live rock (and virtually everything in the tank that I don't scrape), and maybe it's just my tank, but I can guarantee that if I put two small items in the tank today - one light and one dark, corraline would grow on the dark one first. Weird - and I don't know why
