I want to start setting up my tank it is a 50 gallon and I was wondering about all of the things that I need and the approximate costs of setting it up. I was also wondering how long the tank usually takes to cycle and be ready to have fish in it.

youll need a good filter (i REALLY like my fluval 404 i think its like $150 new) a decent skimmer ($100) tank will be around $100, stand $150, lights (for reef ) $150-$1000 (depending on what kind of lights) rock about 75-115 lbs will be $400-600, testkits/other odds n ends $200

ive got a 26 gal tank and only have 9 lbs of live rock so far and not all of my accessories and i have spent at least $750 and im fixing to upgrade my lights and buy a skimmer and about 40 more lbs of live rock. so im probably gonna have about another $750 so if you have exactly what i have (and will have)itll cost about 1500. but i think i got ripped about $100 on my tank. so maybe 1400

Well I purchased 60 gallon for a fish only tank I am about a month into it and have spent about $650 getting things going there is no fish, crabs, inverts, etc included in this amount.... This hobby definitly costs some money to do it right anyway.... The best way to keep your costs down is not to jump into anything fast, research as much as you can the people on the site are a great help and even though they might be hard to find there are some really good LFS.... Mine really has been behind me along the way, even to the extent to replace to fish that I lost when I got to excitied and added to many at one time!!! One of the best things to do is discover what exactly your goal is going to be with your tank... You know what kind of fish you want ultimately want, reef or not to reef? All these things will make your costs go up and down.... Hoep this helps....

You are going to spend some money in this hobby! I really like my tank though. The only problem I have run in to is that you can only put so much live stuff in a 55 gallon( or any size tank). I have already got another tank, 29 gallon, and can't wait to start stocking it. I have a 90 gallon tank I would love to get up and running, but we might be moving to our house in a few months. To answer the question I am somewhere between $1500 and $2000 with my 55 gallon and already have about $300 tied up in my 29 that is cycling.

I am around $4,500K for my corner 92 but it has everything. UV, auto top off, fuge, drips, 120LBS rock, MH,VHO and alot of coral. Fish now seem cheap!
Do not skimp on 2 things or you will just throw out what you have and buy better later:
Filter/Skimmer and lights
I could start a reptile farm with all the cheap lights I have.
My 2 cents
