Thanks for all the info on plate corals. Have had mine for 8 years and am surprised it does so well in that the peppermint shrimp are a constant threat to feeding time. Once a week I give it a morsel of shrimp or scallop and have to keep watch for at least 30 minutes. The shrimps will still open the mouth of it to get the food, and honestly, I wish it would teach the shrimps a lesson but it will never happen. It extends out a good 8 inches when fully extended and has a gorgeous pink-purple mouth with the body being green neon, but changing at times. . The polyps are almost always fully extended. Have always had mine on the sand bed and it is pretty shaded by a very large spaghetti leather. Has only shifted slightly now and then. One of my favorites.

That coral should be called "The golden Glorieon". I have to get some pics done but am so unsavvy as to how to get them onto the computer. Can maybe have my husband help. Have a digital, should be able to do it. Gorgeous photos, thanks to all of you who share them.

They can do well under less than PC lighting...many hobbyists keep them under PC's and/or VHO's with success. latino...yours looks a little bare in the center...mine does with draw a bit from time to time but any exposed skeleton can sometimes be cause for concern. Do you ever direct feed yours? It may help it recover if there is a problem. I've found mine to be fairly hardy and its bounced back a few times from minor tissue recession.

actually... I just bought it maybe 2weeks now? it seems to be doing a lot better. i feed it for the 2nd time last night and it did take in food both times. should I be spot feeding it more?? seem to be doing beter now. I see more tenticale growing on the outter rim but the center still looks the same. What else should I try?? or should I just give it time?:notsure:

Perfect timing....just picked this up today (when I go to LFS, they give to me for free.....saved a brain so far) I read a post from tecofish that said it came back, so there is a chance?? I want to get into the habit of saving things they are killin

Anthony Calfo spoke at our spring reef club open house a year and a half ago. One of the things he brought up in his slide show were plate corals and how that if they have even a spec of live tissue that they can often make a recovery in a healthy system. Definitely worth the risk for the price! Good luck!

...and I have often heard that they sometimes continue to deterioate. They can be saved...but I'd insure good conditions and lots of TLC. Myself I don't think the odds of saving one in that condition are very good...best of luck and let us know how it turns out.
I have managed to "save" a few corals in the same manner. A couple of my current specimans were added under the same conditions...damaged or in poor condition...and normally free or at a reduced price. But I've never tried to save a plate with any type of damage or tissue loss. It would be very interesting to see yours recover and thrive.

Thank you for the replys.....I have him under a ledge for the time being (came from weak PC, I have MH) I'll keep you posted of progress. I would rather have it die in my tank knowing I tried then to see a skelaton in theirs.

My plate coral is exactly like yours and it has been under actinic lighting and at the very bottom on the substratum. A spaghetti coral shades it also just a little. It has never shifted from where I put it. We feed only once every two weeks a good chunk of seafood. Used to feed it every week but it seems to do just fine feeding it less. The peppermint shrimps must be kept at bay for a good 30 minutes. They can dig out the food easily even though its mouth has closed tightly. It is 8 yrs. now in the tank.
