I'm really new to this and I purchased a set up with lots of live rock and I've taken some photos of the things growing on them. I think I may know what they are, but I'd love to know for sure. the pics make these guys look pretty big but they are really tiny. How big will these get?
And what is the red and purple colers on the rocks?
Thanks

1st pic looks like Xenia, don't know what is in the the 2nd?, 3rd l;ooks like a branching frogspawn.
besides that you have a heck of an algae issue. There are going to be some fat clean up crew in there LOL!

Yeah, first pic is xenia, a very cool soft coral that will get even cooler when it gets bigger.
Second is a branching frogspawn coral. Make sure and leave a few inches between these guys and other things in your tank. The tentacles get longer at night and blow around in the current looking for food. They won't hurt you, but they will sting other corals, clams, anything with exposed tissue. You skin is thick enough to protect you, so you won't feel anything, but it can kill a coral. Very cool to look at, and not at all harmful to your tank, as long as you make sure and give it space. I've never seen the tentacles longer than 6".
Also, if you haven't already, I'd invest in a turbo snail. He'll gobble that algae right up!

Oh, yeah, and the red and purple stuff on your rock is probably coraline algae. I couldn't really see it in the pics. It's a sign your tank is maturing. It's normal and beneficial. I have several rocks that are almost solid purple. Make sure you're adding calcium regularly to ensure it's growth, as it's a hard, encrusting algae. There's a product called "Purple Up" that's supposed to help coraline specifically, but it's pretty much just calcium, so I'd just go with an all-around calcium supplement.

Did you buy that as live rock and did you buy that knowing that you were purchasing coral. Very nice live rock if that came on there!
