Could this be Ich?

For the past few days, I have seen spots on the fins of my fish that resemble Ich. I mostly notice them at night. The next morning they are usually completely gone or barely noticeable. I have a QT ready, but don't really want to transfer all the fish to treat them until I'm sure of what they have. My display tank is a 150 gallon tank w/LR. The QT tank is a 30 gallon. I have a few Camelback Shrimp, an Emerald Crab, various snails, a Feather Duster and a Bubble Tip Anemone. My fish are a Yellow Tang, 2 False Percula Clowns, a Royal Gramma, Firefish Goby and a Flame Angel. I had thought about trying one of those reef safe ich treatments, but from what I have already read on this forum, they are useless. Any help on what this could be would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply Terry. I have seen it on the Royal Gramma, the Tang and the Flame Angel for the past 3 nights or so, but then they are all clear or nearly clear the next morning. Tonight there are several spots on each of the same three fish, but if it's like the other times, they will be gone in the morning. The Clowns and the Goby are parasite free. As soon as I see the spots are there all the time, I will move all the fish to the QT and treat for ich, but for now I'm just watching them closely. I started the QT with water from my display tank about a week ago.

I have a similar situation.
I was wondering if Ich will eventually go away if the fish is healthy enough or if Ich will never go away, continue to reproduce and when the fish is stressed, take over?
Thanks!

I stopped at my LFS today and one of the employees said it sounded like Ich. He also said he has had good luck with a reef safe treatment made by Tropical Science called Marine Max. I added some to my tank today and will post a thread in a few weeks when I see how it works.

The directions say to treat aquariums with unhealthy conditions every other day until conditions improve, then once every two weeks to maintain healthy conditions. I treated Tuesday and today the spots are completely gone with the exception of a few spots that are barely visible on the Tang. I'll keep everyone posted and submit a new thread on the medication in a week or two if it seems like it worked. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Gave the second treatment last night. All fish are now clear and everything in the tank is doing well. I'm still going to treat at least a couple more times. It looks like it may have worked but I won't be sure until next week. In the meantime, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I did a search and found this product at a couple places. It is advertised as being a prevention not a cure. I wish you luck and hope it works. That would be great! We could atleast try it if the situation should arise. Maybe your fish will be stronger and healthier than ever. My picasso might have ich, can't tell yet. He is always covered in sand so it is hard to tell. I don't want to treat my tank even though there is only about $10-15 of inverts in it, but it might be cheaper than loosing him. Will have QT after Christmas. Keep us posted. -Alex

Well, it doesn't seem to have taken care of the problem. However, the behavior of the fish has not changed at all and they are still acting and eating fine. I'm still not convinced that it is Ich. The spots look like Ich that has been treated and are fading. I'm think I'm just going to watch it for a while and see what happens.

I just wanted to post my experiences as of recent.
November 1 I purchased a flame angel into my 29 reef with a maroone clown(in for about 20 months in the tank). After a couple of days I noticed some ich spots that came and went every other day on the flame. After researching and not being able to QT, I started treating food with garlic a week later. Around November 25th I started treating with Marine Max 3x/week. Since about December 10th, I have not noticed any more Ich spots. I am going to maintain this regimen for a couple more weeks with Marine Max and then go to every 2 weeks. All other life in the tank is fine with no undesireable affects. I also am diligent about clean water and adding Zoe and SeaChem trace minerals. Hopefully all will clear and not reoccur.
I can only assume that both the fish are healthy enough to fight off the ich and the garlic, marine max, etc. may
be aiding.
I hope this goes away forever! I will try to post again to let ya'll know.

I don't know why they say that they are useless. I have used Kick Ich three times when I placed new fish into a tank or quarenteen in the last two years and it has worked every time. In order for it to work one must use it for at least a month after the last spot is seen or it will come back. Use the every other day dosing or better yet a half a dose every day (this worked well for me) the every third dosing did not work for me. You also need to remove the skimmer and any carbon type filter media for it to work. I also did a 20 to 25 percent water change weekly during treatment to keep the water quality high without a skimmer. I have not lost a fish to ich or any crab, snail or shrimp or coral with treatment. So, I say try the Kick Ich first, and if it does not work you can do the work of hypo. The main downside to the Kick is that it costs a lot to dose over a long period. I used it for about five weeks the last time because sometimes the ich is stubborn and a spot or two will pop up during the first week or two during treatment. Like I said, I believe it works well if you use it for a month past the last spot is seen. Lesley

Hypo would be over by then and if done correctly would have eradicated the ich without a lot of money spent, just time.
Listen to Terry on this one. He has helped me out many times. He has made me a true believer in "the trouble and inconvenience of a proven method" :D
