Couple Kalkwasser Questions....

I have a 75 gallon aquarium and was wondering how to add the kalk to the tank. I have to add about one gl of top off water each morning to the tank, so would I just add 1 teaspoon of kalk to the water and pour it in, or do I have to do something special with it? It kind of makes me nervous because I have never used this product befor, but everybody seems to think it is the best stuff to top off with. What exactly does this stuff do, that liquid calcium doesn't? Sorry for all the questions, but I am just not understanding this stuff.

Do not just pour it in, kalk water has a ph around 12 and can cause a spike in ph by doing that. what you want to do is get like a gal. jug cut a hole close to the bottom but not at the bottom because that is were the kalk sediment is and you don't want to put that in your tank, add an air line in the hole with a air valve. fill the jug with your di or ro water and add a teaspoon ( you may have to play with this amount some to find what works best for your tank) and put the cap on the jug and mix well, let it set for an hour or longer and then slow drip into you tank for top-off.

dripping is a waste of time IMO and hard to control as well. just dose it at night or early morning when your pH is at its lowest.

for over a year i was. i just recently switched over to bulk additives so im adding High Purity Anhydrous Calcium Chloride, High Purity Soda Ash, High Purity Magnesium Sulfate
and Ammonia Magnesium Chloride. if that doesnt spike your pH, i dont know what will.
i can guarantee as long as you dont go over board and use only what your tank needs, and dose into a sump at nigh, you can safely dose kalkwasser. times change. that articles from 03, people were running wet/drys on reefs back then too.

When one has only a small tank, these methods ay have their advantages. not considering additional cost. The idea here with these posings to help a new person out, not confuse them.
But when folks like Bang drip. I too plan to stay with the tried and true after 35 years of keeping tanks running well

The slurry method has some plusses and some minusses.
For me personally the minusses are greater than the plusses so I continue to drip. Each situation needs to be evaluated on an individual bases, there are no methods that are perfect for every application.

Anthony also typically does weekly 95% water changes too so his methods may not fit the needs of everybody.

i understand that. doesnt mean you have to do 95% water changes a week for it to work properly though.
