Hey,here are a couple of pictures of our 1st try at live rock. I know its figi lr but what the purple stuff and green hair like thing is (algea?) any ideas?
Purple stuff looks like coraline algae and it's a good thing if you can keep it of the glass. The green stuff I'm not so sure of. I've got some Fiji in my tank as well with the green stuff on it and haven't had any problems with it since I got it. Had it about 7 or 8 months now.
Thanx guys! I got alot of reading and learning to do.This lr is all new to me. Now,. will the cc star or hermit crab hurt it? Cchip doesnt seem interested in it yet but the hermit is all over it! Also this may sound naive but what do most people do if they make up too much water for water change? Can you store it, and if so how? Any input would be grateful.Thanx again!
Yes you can store it. Its best if you have some sort of little extra pump in it to keep it circulating, and you need to watch for air contaminants such as hairspray, window cleaner, stuff like that. No the hermit won't hurt your Coralline.
Thanx claw! You didnt have an opinion on the cc starfish. Is that because its not good for the lr? I do have an extra pump.I have a 20 gal. bucket that i use for the water, any clue to how to cover it? we have 3 cats. My thought is plastic wrap of some sort.
How old is your tank? It looks very new as far as the sand etc...That choc chip star will probably need to be spot fed if the tank is new, otherwise I suggest taking it out since it will probably starve.
In any event, cc stars will not fare well with any coral if that is your final intentions. Cc stars are supposedly NOT reef safe.
The tank is 3 years old and the star fish has been in there for about 8 months. We had a naso tang in there but we recently traded him. He does get spot feed so i dont think he will die. He's done great so far. (fingers crossed) If worse comes to worse we will find a new home for him.
No that is great! Im glad it is doing well, when I saw the pic, your tank looked really clean and I just thought it was new. It is a beautiful specimen, Id love to get one myself, but had read they arent reef-safe.
Thanx alot.I know, that is one of my concerns. We have had the live rock (well, one of the pieces) for about a month and the star has only been on it once for about 20 minutes. so as i said, fingers crossed. Actually the picture is the 1st time he was on it.
