how much live rock should be in a 26 gallon tank? is a filter and protein skimmer with airhead adequate? can you put plants directly into the aquarium for removal of nitrates?

about 20 to 30 lbs is ideal, a skimmer is not needed. i have a 29 gallon and 20 gallon with out a skimmer but you do need some kind of filter.And yes you can put plants in the tank.

1-1.5 lbs per gallon is the rule of thumb. But you don't have to follow that rule. I think the more the better but you should put in whatever amount aquascapes your tank the way you want. Skimmer is not neccesary but once you've used one and seen the difference, You'll get one. Filters definately needed, also use a power head aimed upwards to create a ripple on the surface of your water. This prevents the gases and oils from gathering on the surface of your water. If you add plants to the tank do you need any special lighting? I have basic lights as its a new tank, hopefully for christmas ill be getting the special lights.
